Introduction
Well, we’ve finally arrived and the end of the course. When you started, you really didn’t know anything about the recording studio process and how affordable and practical one can be in your situations. There is no doubt there will be times when you want to call in someone or go into a traditional studio to obtain the goals your looking for. However, for many things, being able to cut tracks or tweak your mixes on the spur of the moment is fantastic.
There are many more things that could have been discussed and many products that could have been looked at. Still, I believe that you have the foundational knowledge to continue to learn and gain new skills. So, to help start you on your way, I have prepared a live webinar that I hope all of you can attend on:
- Date: Monday, April 20, 2015
- Time: 7:00 – 8:00 pm CDT / GMT-5
Our special guest is a fellow Recording Workshop graduate (1985). His name is John Keane.
So, who is John Keane? Mr. Keane is a recording engineer who started out the same way many of you have, as a musician. Like many of you, he developed an interest in the recording arts and began to build a home studio. Mr. Keane has won Grammy awards for both himself and the band he was an engineer for the now classic group, R.E.M. along with many other artists.
John began is interest in audio recording in 1981 and by 1985 he had transitioned from someone with a hobby to a professional recording engineer. In a sense, John still has a “home recording studio” because he bought an old house in Athens, Georgia, where he is from, and converted it into his recording studio -yes, the whole house is his studio.

- What were some of the things that you learned while taking the course?
- How could the course be improved?
- What didn’t you like about the course?
- Was the course what you expected?
- Did you enjoy the John Keane webinar?
- After having taken this course, do you feel more comfortable with the idea of creating your own home studio setup?
After you finish you paper just email it to me.
Summary and Conclusion
Well, now you have learned a little about some of the elements of audio production and how you can setup your own little studio. We learned about microphones, recording consoles, a beginning layout, the 5 components from Graham Cochrane, patchbays, and finally, we had a great webinar with John Keane.
Clearly, there are hundreds, if not thousands of ways to configure and setup studio but the basic elements always apply. I hope that this course has helped you to become familiar with those elements and that you pursue your desire to establish your own audio production facility.
